OBIB TRAINING CENTRE
Background

OTC was established in 2000 by Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation as a vocational training Centre. In 2008, it was registered as section 21 incorporated association not for gain by Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation and Skorpion Zinc Corporation. The Centre offers basic training skills to residents of Rosh Pinah and those in the surrounding areas, aimed at enhancing the employability of the unemployed Rosh Pinah residents, thus creating a pool of much needed semi-skilled individuals who could be employed by any of the local businesses. Sponsorship of the projects is not only limited to the mines, but any other sponsor can run their projects through Obib, once approved by the Management Committee. Facilitating Local Economic Development (LED) that is less dependent (and even independent) of the current mining activities, supported by the necessary training is the primary focus of OTC’s work.

OTC’s mission is to initiate and sustain efficient and effective community development programs in response to needs of the community in Rosh Pinah, in the first place and also in the// Karas Region. We work in a committed and caring manner towards the improvement of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual qualities of life of those we serve. We are committed to achieve sustainable empowerment. We aim to work in close relationship with any institution that endorses OTC’s vision and mission and can support or elaborate OTC’s work in any way.

ODC’S vision is a self-sustainable institution that initiates and support community development in Rosh Pinah and the //Karas region.

How Does OBIB Generates its Funds?
OTC is a non-profit organization, thus, no fees or dividends are paid out. All its projects are financed by the mines or project owners for specific projects. OTC includes admin fees, currently amounting to 15% of the total project costs which all the sponsors have to pay. All savings made on projects that are coming out cheaper, and any interests gained, are re-invested in further projects.Once a need has been identified, the project Coordinator formulates a specific project proposal, it gets endorsed by the Management Committee that ensures that Obib is run according to sound business principles and has the approval authority, and then presented to possible sponsors. It should be noted that projects are rolled out only once there are funds available to do so. Funds are usually available once the mines have committed to sponsor certain projects, or any other sponsor comes on board. The centre offers basic skills in most of its trainings, with the aim that the participants will build further on the skills provided.

Selection Criteria
Preference is given to male and female Namibian members of the community whose chances of being admitted in other institutions of high learning/vocational training centres are almost impossible. Obib requires that the participants at least are able to understand English, as training is offered in English, but does not leave out possible participants who are unable to speak/understand English. In certain cases, the sponsor will determine the type of participant they wish to be trained as their institutions may deem fit, eg. Female participants only.
